TB-500 is a synthetic fragment of thymosin beta-4, a natural protein involved in cell movement and tissue repair. The product analyzed by doping labs is the acetylated seven-amino-acid piece Ac-LKKTETQ, the actin-binding domain of the full 43-amino-acid protein. It is not the same molecule as thymosin beta-4, even though the names are often used interchangeably.

It is marketed for recovery, tendon and muscle repair, and wound healing. The supporting data are mostly lab and animal work on the fragment, plus human trials of the full-length protein.

It is banned for use in sports even after injury.
